Ponytails With Style

Now more than ever, adult women are taking hairstyles that were once reserved for younger girls and making it a style to be reckoned with. If you always thought that ponytails were boring, think again! Celebrities are taking their ponytails and giving them a new flair that works anywhere, from running errands to being the center of attention at the next party.

Ponytails no longer have to be clean cut with every strand of hair in place. Today’s generation of ponytails is funky, fierce and untamed. You can dress them up with barrettes and rhinestones or soften the look with a flower.

When your typical ponytail behind your head at the nape of your neck will no longer do, go for the side ponytail. By throwing your locks to the side, you can create a sassy yet soft look that can flatter any face shape. Nicole Riche is one celeb who always manages to look great with a side ponytail, without looking like a little kid.

To prep, your sexy tresses for the side ponytail, start by spritzing 2-inch sections of your hair with styling spray and wrapping them around a wide-barreled curling iron to create loose waves. Once you’re done curling all your hair, run your fingers through to secure them into your side ponytail a few inches away from the left or right side of your head. To hide the band securing your hair, you can take a thin strand of hair from the bottom and wrap it around the band and fasten into place with a bobby pin.

For a more dramatic look, you can try out the high ponytail that is secured almost at the top of your head. This style is a favorite of Tyra Banks and works especially well if you have bangs. The key is to make the ponytail tight enough to lock in the look but you don’t want to pull it so tight that it makes your face look severe. This is where volume comes into play.

Get your hair ready for this style by sectioning off your bangs and spraying the rest of your hair with a volumizing spray. Next, take a section of your hair from the top part of the back of your head and gently tease it for added volume. Now brush your hair back and up into your ponytail just above your ears and secure with an elastic band. Use gloss or pomade to smooth down flyaway strands and create a clean and sleek appearance. Wear your bangs how you normally would.

If the dramatic and sleek look doesn’t work for you, give your ponytail a funky makeover by making it look messy. Messy ponytails work for running weekend errands or going out to dinner or a club. The best thing about this type of ponytail is that you can recreate the look without having to wash your hair so it’s quick and easy. To get your locks to appear messy, spray the roots with volumizing spray and blow dry your hair using your fingers in place of a comb or brush. As your hair dries use your fingers to scrunch the hair. Create an off-center part or a middle part, whichever works best for you, and bring all of your hair loosely to the back of your neck. This look works best when the hair band has less tension so the hair hangs loosely near the middle of the back of your head.
